Rest In Peace Jody Payne...

I was so sad to hear that guitarist Jody Payne passed away on Saturday.  He was 77.  I've been a huge fan of Willie Nelson and Family since 1979, and Jody was a core part of that family.  It's hard to see time marching on, but it always does...

Here's a video memory of Jody playing with Willie...

Rest in Peace Jody. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for visiting my friends. I will see you again tomorrow. :)

My Current Journaling Process...

A few posts back, Jackie posed this question:

"How many places do you journal each day? Meaning if you have a variety of art journals do you repeat things in each one, or do you choose a journal, and skip from one to another?"

Right now, I have only two main journals I am working in daily - My daily writing/idea journal, and my Book of Days.

The format for my daily writing/idea journal changes all the time.  I've used regular lined diaries, smashbooks, and handmade books. I love variety. It makes writing more fun! My Big Grid Journal currently serves as my daily writing/idea book.  I usually record the day's events and the weather, right after I wake from my nap.  It helps me warm up for the evening's creative project.  Along with being a daily diary, it also holds any writing assignments/prompts for workshops that I'm taking.  I can work out ideas, and paste photos of things that inspire me in it. Here's an example of a recent spread that I haven't shared yet.

My Book of Days is my art journal.  It is the one that I paint and get messy in.  The format will change a little bit, but it's always made of sturdy pages that can take paint and other wet media. I work in it most every weekday evening.  I use it for all of my different workshop-inspired pages, as well as just experimenting and playing.   I'm on Volume 4 for 2013. Here's the current one I'm working in...

Here are the two of them together.  As you can see, the cover on my Book of Days is starting to get deliciously messy!  They are both 9"x12..."

I reserve the weekends for working on Project Life, and other unfinished projects, like travel journals from previous trips.  I find that taking a break from art journaling on the weekends, makes it fresh and fun again come Monday!

I have tried having different journals for every workshop I am taking, and sometimes that is really fun!  Lately however, I most enjoy doing it this way.  It keeps my head from getting jumbled up with too many choices, and I get to see my journals fill up faster when I only have two!

I hope this is helpful!  Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments section and I will do my best to answer them.  The most important thing to remember is to do what works for you!

Project Life Update -

Hey there and happy Saturday!  I'm back with another Project Life update---

This spread is for March 7 - 17th, 2013...

Page Protectors: We R Memory Keepers on the left (square slots in the middle row); Project Life Design A on the right.
What's happening here? It was a regular week at home - lots of little happenings and lots of art stuff.

 Closeup of left side...
Memorabilia used here includes a label from the new set of gelly roll pens I ordered. A little bit of the seafoam kit and mostly miscellaneous stash used for this page.

 Closeup of right page...
Memorabilia included here is a beautiful thank you card we received, and a 3D ultrasound of our niece (how amazing are those)?!  It was my mom's birthday on March 17th.  She would have been 80 this year.  I miss her every day.

My process of doing my project life pages is evolving as I go.  I went through a phase where I was tired of it, and I just gave myself permission to put the whole thing aside for a few weeks.  I'm so glad I did, because now I am in LOVE with it again, and having tons of fun!  I tend to do little bits during the week, and bigger chunks on the weekend.  Once a month at my girlfriends' crop, I do a lot of catching up and embellishing.  It's working great.

Are you doing any form of Project Life-type memory keeping?  If you are how's it going?

For more info on Project Life, click here to go to Becky Higgins Website.

Thank you so much for visiting and for your comments and questions!  They truly make my day!

I will see you again tomorrow my friends!

Question and Answer Post...

Hey everyone!  How's it going?  I set aside this post to answer some of your questions.  I hope this is helpful!

Deli Paper

What is it?
Deli paper is that stuff that sandwiches come wrapped in sometimes, when you get them at the deli.  It's more translucent than butcher paper, and less waxy than wax paper.  It's also different from parchment paper.  It's become one of my favorite go-to tools lately!

Where do you get it?
You can get it on ebay, and probably other places online too.  I got mine from amazon.  You get a HUGE amount.  Here's a link.

The cool thing about deli paper is that it's translucent, but tougher than tissue paper, and it's super thin.  It's awesome for collagework for these reasons.

The clouds on this journal page are acrylic paint on deli paper.  I did it with a gelli plate, but you could just as easily use a paint brush or your fingers.  I cut them out and glued them on with a glue stick.  They melt right into the page...

In this example, I drew the girl on deli paper with pencil, and then glued her onto the page.  It's a great way to make sure you have the drawing how you want it; before commiting it to a painted page, where it's harder to erase...
The surface is more waxy on one side than the other, but even the waxy side is not as waxy as waxed paper.  (I managed to get the word waxy 4 times in one sentence - wow.)  I don't prep the surface, but be aware that some things work better than others with this paper.  Acrylic paint works great.  Copic markers work great.  Water-based markers don't work as well.  You just have to experiment a little bit.

Here's the same journal page after acrylic paint and colored pencil was added to the image of the girl...

I also put deli paper in between my journal pages when I'm working on them, to catch spill over paint.  Then you can actually use those painted papers for collage later.

There are so many things you can do with deli paper it's amazing.

If you are interested in learning more about this awesome stuff, I highly recommend Julie Balzer's workshop called "Getting Started with Deli Paper."  It's chock full of ideas and Julie is an awesome teacher.  It's very inexpensive too.  Click here to find out more about the class.

Pan Pastels:
I use pan pastels in my big grid journal to create colored backgrounds.  Brenda asked if I fix the page after using the pan pastels.  I don't fix the pages.  I find that if I take a paper towel wrapped around my finger and rub the pages really well, the excess pastel comes right off and then what's left doesn't smear.  If I'm using pan pastels on a page in my regular art journal, I will cover the page with a light coating of gel medium or clear gesso to stop smearing.  I don't use spray fixative at all because of the toxicity.

Finding the time to create:
Emie asked me when I find time to work in my journal.  Usually what I do is take a nap after work, so I can get a little energy back, and then I work in my journal in the evening, when I get up from my nap.  I usually finish one spread each evening during the week.  I stay up too late, but for me it's worth it.  On the weekends I work on Project Life.  I don't have kids at home, and I have a husband who is super supportive of my creative time.  He has his own projects he likes to work on, so it works out perfect for us.  Less laundry gets done.  The house is more dusty than it should be, but that's okay with me.

I hope this info is helpful.  I also got questions about where I draw inspiration from, as well as what my process is for working in different journals.  These are both great questions that deserve a post of their own.  Those will be coming up soon!

Please always feel free to leave questions in the comment section.  I love to hear from you!

Thanks so much for visiting, and I will see you again tomorrow!!!

Dream...

Last night I finished a page inspired by Dina Wakely's Life Book lesson, and I had so much fun!

The idea was to get your troubles out onto the page, so you can let go of them.  It will definitely come in handy for that, but since last night I wasn't feeling troubled, I just went with the mood I was in, and ended up with this...

I'm working in a Kraft paper section of my Book of  Days right now, and I'm loving the slightly different twist it puts on my pages.  The main thing used on this page is stencils and masks.  The word dream and the rainbow are store-bought, and the woman is a mask I made by gluing a magazine image onto cardstock and cutting it out.  I won't go into the whole process (since that would giveaway class secrets), but I really had fun with this page!

For more about the ultra-talented Dina Wakely, you can visit her blog here.
For more about Life Book, click here.

Tomorrow is question and answer day.  I've already got a few questions to answer, but if you have any more, feel free to leave them in the comments, and I will answer them in tomorrow's post!

Thank you so much for visiting and for your comments!  It makes my day to know you were here!  Have a great Thursday my friends!

Life Book with Effy...

Hi my friends! Effy Wild is this week's teacher over at Life Book, which was LOTS of fun!  We worked on the subject of having compassion for yourself, just like you would have for others; which was a great reminder for me.

Here's how my page turned out...
Done in my Book of Days with tissue paper, acrylic paint, gelatos, deli paper (the scallop around the right side of the heart) a foam stamp, and a sharpie poster paint pen in white.

With the leftover paint on my pallette, I made a random background in my road atlas journal for future use...

You can find out more about Life Book by clicking here.

Thank you so much for your questions and comments!  I really appreciate hearing from you!  I try to answer your questions in the comments section, or let you know that I will address it in a future post.

Upcoming posts will address questions about deli paper, and about my journaling process, so stay tuned for that.  :0)

I will see you again tomorrow!

Project Life Tuesday...

Hey there everyone!  Happy Tuesday!  This week I have a Project Life spread from March to share with you today...

This is from March 1st - 6th  to be exact...
Page protectors used for this spread:
Project Life Design A on the left,
an 8.5 x 11  from Stampin Up in the middle,
and a WeR Memory Keepers on the right that has space in the middle for square photos...
What's happening here?  This spread documents a monthly crop, some art, and every day life at home.

Closeup of left side...

Memorabilia used here includes the label from a can of spinach (proving you really can put just about ANYTHING in your PL album - ha), my crop nametag, and packaging from a washi tape purchase.

Closeup of right side with insert...
I start each month with a page from this calendar by willowing.org.  Artwork is by Tamara LaPorte.  I cut it out and adhered it to patterned paper.

Full spread with back side of insert...
I used the seafoam core kit, plus a little Simple Stories and other miscellaneous stash for this spread.

Detail of back side of insert...
Memorabilia used here includes a copy of an email I received from American Songwriter, about Merle Haggard.  I also included screen shots of two new artists I learned about - Charley Harper and The Staves.

Closeup of Right Side...
No memorabilia here, but I did include an old photo of my doberman companion China.  She passed away in 1995, but I saw her in an old video this week, and it touched my heart. It was so awesome to see her again.  Love you girl.

I love doing my memory keeping this way so much!  The biggest problem I have is getting good pictures of my spreads.  I ordered a photo lightbox cube, so we shall see if that helps!

Thanks so much for visiting today!  I really appreciate you!

See you again tomorrow!

And now, on to today's blogpost...
********************

Not too long ago, I was working away in my studio, and all of a sudden, out of the blue, my mind conjured up an image from my child hood - TROLLS.  You know the kind of little dolls popular in the 1970's, with the long, flowy hair?  I have no idea what made me think of it, but suddenly I had to have a troll!

So, I went to ebay and did a search and oh my goodness, there are TONS of trolls for sale there!  I got lost in a bliss of trolldom.  Big trolls, tiny trolls, huge lots of trolls.  Did you know there are two-headed trolls?  and horse trolls?  Anyhoo, after a long search I found two trolls that were calling my name, and I was lucky enough to win both auctions!

Meet my new little friends...
I'm calling them Hal and Hoagy.

Hal is on the left.  He is a new troll - part of a set of five that spell Bingo.  I hear people bring trolls to bingo halls for good luck.  I love his yellow hair, and the fact that he proudly states he is a winner!

Hoagy (on the right) is a vintage troll from 1984.  It's hard to see but he has a big orange elf hat.  I love the sweet expression on his face and his wild white hair.

Don't they make a great pair?  They now live with me in my studio and make me smile every time I look at them.  I say indulge your childhood loves whenever possible.

What did you love as a child?  Is there a toy that is calling your name?

Thank you so much for visiting today, and I will see you again tomorrow!

Project Life Update...

Hi everyone!  I just scrolled through my posts and realized that I haven't done a Project Life Update since April!  Eek!!!  Soooo, I've got one for you today - about time, eh?!!

This year I am not doing my spreads on a weekly basis.  I am doing them willy nilly, meaning a spread might cover one day or ten days, depending on how much I have to share.  The one thing that stays constant though, is that the upper left corner of each spread is a title card, that states the time frame covered.

Project Life for February 25 - 28, 2013

I used design G (left) and A (right) page protectors...
What's happening here?  This spread documents a three-day trip I took up to Northern Minnesota for work. I love traveling for work, and it always gives me lots of fodder for PL!

 Closeup of Left side...
Memorabilia used here includes a postcard from the hotel I stayed at, a local boutique's business card, and my hotel room keycard.

 Closeup of right side...
Memorabilia used here includes a greeting card I bought on my trip (isn't that orange bird gorgeous?  I couldn't resist), and another postcard - this one of the scenic variety.

I didn't use a lot of products on this spread, pretty plain and simple, but it tells the story of my trip, and that's what matters, right?

I am going to try to share a couple of spreads each week, in hopes of eventually catching up.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!  Also, if you are doing Project Life, I'd love to hear how it's going for you!

And don't forget, you've got until tonight at midnight (CST) to enter the drawing for a free seat in the Book of Days Premium Art Journaling Workshop by Effy Wild!  To enter, leave a comment on the August 1st post, by scrolling down or clicking here to go directly to the post.

Thank you so much for visiting, and I will see you again tomorrow!

Deli Paper as a flap...

It's day three of the 30-day blogalong, and I'm remembering now how much I love daily blogging.  There's something about getting into a rhythm of creating, sharing and connecting that feels amazing! I love it so much when you leave me comments, because it helps me gain new insights in so many ways; and completes that circle of connection.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that!

Today I have another page from my Book of Days to share with you all.

On this page, I was working out the meaning of some recurring dreams I have.  If you look closely, you can still see some of the writing that I covered up with crumpled deli paper...
I was really inspired by Effy's idea to use deli paper as a flap on the page - so I tried that too.  I loved working with the translucency of the paper, and it created a neat way to hide some more journaling...

Here's what it looks like with the flap open...
The clouds are done with a Julie Balzer stencil and pan pastels.  On top of the flap I created patterns in the clouds with copic marker.

Have you tried using deli paper in your artwork yet?  If so, what have you discovered?  Any favorite ideas that you'd like to share?  I'd love to hear them!

Don't forget that my drawing for a free seat in Book of Days Premium is open until Sunday night at midnight!  To enter, leave a comment on the August 1st post by clicking here.

Thank you so much for visiting me today!  I really appreciate hearing from you!

Some Pages from my Big Grid Journal...

Hi again and welcome to day two of the 30-day blogalong! I'm coming to you this evening from my studio (as usual), where my little feline companion Willie, is feeling especially snuggly...

Thank you so much for your comments on yesterday's post!  I'm excited that you like the giveaway, and I'm LOVING hearing what inspires each and every one of you!

Today I have a few pages from my big grid journal to share with you.  This is the book where I chronicle my days, and take little notes, record the weather and whatnot.  I created it as part of the Lollapalooza 3 workshop (taught by Martha Lever), and it's really a lot of fun to work in!

Here we go with the pages from July 4 - 11...
It's a great way to use stamps, markers, and practice your doodling...

I made the green and blue painting in the top right corner with a kids spin-art toy I picked up.  So much fun!

Lollapalooza 3 is a lot of fun and doesn't take long to go through.  If you want to find out more, click here to check it out!

Don't forget that the Book of Days Premium workshop giveaway is open until Sunday night at midnight!  To enter, check out yesterdays post by scrolling down or clicking here.

Thanks so much for visiting!  I will see you again tomorrow!
